Later reporting identified the building as Young Ocean, a seafood distribution company. Firefighters shifted to a defensive operation after finding major roof involvement; the fire’s cause remains under investigation.
The Chelan Hills Fire began near U.S. Highway 97 in Douglas County shortly after midnight on July 4, 2026. The fire prompted evacuations in the Chelan Hills and McNeil Canyon areas, killed Orondo resident Robert M. Lister, and was later reported as fully contained on July 10. Douglas County detectives arrested an 18-year-old Kent resident on September 2 after developing probable cause in the ignition investigation.
John Wilson has served as King County assessor since first being elected in 2015 and is not seeking reelection. The King County Office of the Ombuds, an independent county oversight office, investigated a June 2025 complaint concerning Wilson’s alleged use of county resources. Its findings add administrative ethics penalties to an already public controversy involving Wilson and his former partner; criminal charges in that separate case were dismissed in June 2026.

Aaron Brown Myers, an off-duty armed security guard, confronted three teenagers outside a Big 5 Sporting Goods store in Renton in June 2024 after mistaking their airsoft/BB guns for real firearms. Hazrat "Ali" Rohani, 17, was killed, and Myers was also convicted of second-degree assault involving another teen. Myers was sentenced on September 2, 2026, after a King County jury convicted him in May.
