Fort Worth police responded to a reported shooting at La Gran Plaza, in the 4200 block of South Freeway, at about 8:38 p.m. on October 14. Police said an armed security guard shot an adult man who was damaging a jewelry kiosk’s glass cases with a blunt object; the circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation.
A strong cold front crossed North and Central Texas late Thursday, October 15, bringing thunderstorms and locally heavy rain before a much cooler air mass spread south. National Weather Service Fort Worth issued storm statements and a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of the western Dallas-Fort Worth area during the evening. The post-frontal wind hazard continued Friday, October 16, under a region-wide Wind Advisory.
Tyler Ulrich, 21, was an Azle, Texas, native and former Azle High School football player who was a sophomore defensive back at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Oklahoma. He was hospitalized after a traumatic injury during Southern Nazarene’s road game at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkansas and died on October 15. Southern Nazarene and the Azle community announced support for Ulrich’s family, teammates and friends; a subsequent Southern Nazarene game was canceled.
Pilot Point ISD is a public school district in Pilot Point, Texas. Its board of trustees placed Superintendent Dr. Shannon Fuller and Police Chief Eric Dortch on paid administrative leave while an outside attorney investigates a confidential personnel complaint. The board has stressed that it has made no findings and said the investigation does not concern student safety.
Tarrant County commissioners considered a Hispanic Heritage Month resolution recognizing three Latino-led media organizations: Hola Texas, Northside Community Magazine, and The 817 Podcast. The court amended the resolution to remove The 817 Podcast after Republican Commissioner Matt Krause objected to recognizing co-host EJ Carrion, who the Star-Telegram reported faces criminal charges connected to an August Commissioners Court removal. The amended resolution passed 3-2, but the two remaining organizations declined recognition in solidarity with the podcast.
The “No Kings” movement has held nationwide demonstrations opposing President Donald Trump’s administration and policies; WFAA reports its first official protests were held June 14, 2025, countering a Washington military parade. The October 17, 2026 mobilization is being promoted as “No Kings: Vote Early,” combining demonstrations with voter-participation and early-voting outreach ahead of the November midterm elections.
Grand Prairie ISD halted South Grand Prairie High School’s planned production of "Little Shop of Horrors" after senior Ana Mota, a female student, was cast as Seymour, a male character. The district said its decision considered a romantic relationship between the main characters, themes involving an abusive relationship, and compliance with Texas Senate Bill 12. At the October 15 board meeting, Mota and her mother publicly challenged the decision and sought clarification; the district said the school would instead stage "Frozen."
