Pittsburgh Regional Transit is seeking to permanently close the Wabash Tunnel, a 1903 tunnel linking Mount Washington and Station Square. The agency says the tunnel structure remains in fair condition, but its lighting, ventilation and electrical systems are in poor to critical condition. PRT previously canceled a planned Wabash Tunnel rehabilitation amid a capital-budget tradeoff and a broader repair backlog.
An Allegheny County judge signed an order exempting union-represented Pittsburgh EMS paramedics and EMTs from the city residency requirement. The change follows a union lawsuit and contractual language that made the exemption contingent on a favorable court ruling. EMS managers remain subject to the residency rule, while Pittsburgh rank-and-file police and union firefighters had previously obtained similar exemptions.
Glassport is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. In an Aug. 6 WTAE report, residents and a local business owner said delayed and mixed-up mail was interfering with bill payments and business paperwork. USPS said it was unaware of delivery problems in the Glassport/Dravosburg area and that available mail was being delivered as usual, while urging customers to report concerns directly.
Patrick Roy Vereb, former owner/operator of Eternity Pet Memorials in Pittsburgh, faces criminal charges alleging that he failed to provide promised pet cremation and burial services and did not return the proper ashes to owners. The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office says he is charged with theft by deception and deceptive business practices. The planned plea does not include a sentencing agreement on the top theft charge, and sentencing is to follow a presentence investigation.
The Pittsburgh Irish Festival has operated for more than 35 years as a regional celebration of Irish culture, featuring performers, artists, food vendors and other small businesses. Its organizer, the Irish Partnership of Pittsburgh, says accumulated financial pressures—including a 2018 flood, relocation costs, pandemic-era cost increases and severe weather during the most recent festival—have put the event at risk. The organization has begun a $200,000 campaign, "Keep the Tradition Alive," to support the festival and related cultural programming.
