A heat advisory was in effect for Allegheny County through 8 p.m. Thursday, September 3, after temperatures exceeded 90 degrees on Wednesday. Duquesne Light Company reported a cluster of outages concentrated in North Hills communities, and said extreme heat can stress electrical equipment. The outage total fell substantially during the evening, from 10,610 customers at its reported peak to just over 2,000 late Wednesday night.
A 24-foot private cabin cruiser collided with a towboat/barge near Rices Landing in Greene County, Pennsylvania, on the Monongahela River on Sunday night. Five people were aboard the private boat; three were initially missing, while two were rescued by tugboat/barge personnel. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is investigating the collision, with assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies.
Pennsylvania American Water is constructing a new above-ground booster pump station at the eastern edge of Butler Township to serve customers along Portman Road in nearby Summit Township. The project replaces an aging underground station and follows recent water-main and hydrant upgrades in the same area. Summit Township contributed about $85,000 toward the station upgrades to improve fire flow.
McCully Road in Hampton Township, Allegheny County, was temporarily closed after a pavement failure in a work zone created a large hole in the roadway. The closure affected the segment between Topnick Drive and Short Street and lasted for more than four hours before PennDOT reopened the road Wednesday evening.
Clairton High School announced on September 2 that its football team would forfeit the scheduled Friday game against Steel Valley because of confidential personnel matters. The district did not disclose the nature of those matters and said Wayne Wade remains the Bears’ head coach. Clairton is the defending WPIAL and PIAA state champion, and the forfeit would make the team 0-2 after its opening loss to Farrell.
Pittsburgh has received a $200,000 state Community and Economic Assistance Program grant for park, recreation and trail-access work in eastern neighborhoods. The award includes modernization of Farmhouse Field in Highland Park, installation of water fountains, and planning for trail connections to the Allegheny Riverfront Trail and Brilliant Line network. The funding arrives as the city has identified dozens of older public fountains that require full replacement.
The Pittsburgh Pirates hosted the San Francisco Giants at PNC Park on September 2, 2026. Pittsburgh erased a two-run deficit with runs in the seventh and eighth innings to send the game to extra innings, but San Francisco scored twice in the 10th and held on. The 5-4 result left the Pirates at 68-72 and the Giants at 58-82, according to WPXI’s game report.
