Bernalillo County’s Metropolitan Detention Center has received medical, dental and behavioral-health services from UNM Hospital since July 2023 under a four-year agreement. In July 2026, the county and UNM Hospital agreed not to renew that agreement when it expires in July 2027. County commissioners are now weighing how to organize jail healthcare after that transition, following a presentation that incorporated input from current and formerly incarcerated people.
Project Jupiter is a large-scale data center under construction in Santa Teresa, Doña Ana County, for use by Oracle and OpenAI. Its developer, Yucca Growth Infrastructure, has a pending New Source Review air-quality construction permit application for a proposed natural-gas-powered fuel-cell microgrid. The permit has also faced procedural challenges, including state Supreme Court litigation over the hearing process.
Albuquerque Public Schools has launched a districtwide “right-sizing” engagement process in response to a prolonged enrollment decline and underused school facilities. The district says the meetings are for gathering input on facilities, programs and resources; it has not proposed or decided on any specific school closures, consolidations or boundary changes. APS enrollment fell from about 84,000 students in 2018 to fewer than 64,000 by the end of the 2025-26 school year.
U.S. 550 is a major high-speed corridor in Sandoval County, where about 27,000 vehicles travel daily near Northwest Loop Road. County officials and residents have identified the intersection’s left turns across fast-moving traffic and the absence of median barriers or a signal as key safety concerns. The action follows earlier NMDOT traffic and speed studies affecting US 550, NM 528 and the surrounding Rio Rancho corridor.
Greg Hurst joined New Mexico United ahead of the 2023 season after playing for Phoenix Rising FC. His goal in New Mexico’s 3-1 win over Monterey Bay FC tied Chris Wehan’s club mark of 38 goals, leaving Hurst one goal short of becoming the outright record holder. Andrea Reeb, a Republican who represented New Mexico House District 64 in the Clovis area, resigned her seat after a federal court decision found her dual service as a legislator and special prosecutor unconstitutional. The ruling arose in Alec Baldwin’s civil lawsuit concerning the prosecutors who brought, and later dismissed, involuntary-manslaughter charges over the 2021 "Rust" set shooting. Reeb had been elected to the House in 2022 and was running unopposed for reelection when she resigned.
UNM men’s basketball had already sold 8,720 season tickets as of the morning of October 15, 2026, before its November 2 regular-season opener. The total exceeded the 8,627 tickets UNM reported selling for the prior season, with sales and renewals still open. The Albuquerque Journal reported an 86% renewal rate to date and said UNM led the Mountain West in announced average home attendance last season.
