Wake County Public School System released its 2025-26 accountability results on September 2, reporting its largest one-year proficiency gain in more than a decade outside pandemic-disrupted testing years. The district’s overall proficiency rate rose above its 2018-19 pre-pandemic baseline and reached its highest level since 2012. Remnants of Hurricane Helene damaged Interstate 40 in North Carolina’s Pigeon River Gorge in 2024, washing portions of the eastbound lanes into the Pigeon River. NCDOT converted nine miles of surviving westbound roadway to two-way, reduced-speed traffic in March 2025 while reconstruction proceeds. The corridor is a principal North Carolina–Tennessee mountain route and carries roughly 20,000 to 26,000 vehicles daily even under its current traffic configuration.
Meredith College is a private women’s college in Raleigh, North Carolina, with coeducational graduate programs. Ahead of the fall 2026 term, the college reported 27 faculty departures since the prior school year, including participants in a one-time early-retirement incentive. The college said it had hired seven new faculty members and was working to offer fall courses without disrupting students’ paths to graduation.
Heather Morrow and William Donovan Stanley were prosecuted over a Nov. 16 protest outside a south Charlotte building housing Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement offices. Their joint federal trial was the last criminal case tied to the Trump administration’s November immigration-enforcement operation known as “Operation Charlotte’s Web.” Earlier reporting said Morrow’s original felony case and charges against other people arrested during the operation had been dropped.
