CMS also reported improved school performance grades and a higher four-year graduation rate, though substantial racial achievement gaps remain.
Mecklenburg County raised the minimum wage for full-time county employees as part of an effort to address high living costs and improve workforce recruitment and retention. Queen City News reports that the new base pay is $25.53 for new county government employees, rather than a flat $25.
North Carolina’s Senate Bill 227 became law on June 24, 2026, after the General Assembly overrode Gov. Josh Stein’s veto. The law eliminates DEI offices, programs and staff positions in K-12 public school units, restricts instruction on specified concepts, and requires districts to annually certify compliance to the state Department of Public Instruction.
Union County Public Schools (UCPS) is a North Carolina school district serving Union County, including Monroe and Indian Trail. State assessment results released on September 2, 2026 showed UCPS leading the state for a second consecutive year in the share of students proficient on End-of-Grade and End-of-Course exams. The district’s prior-year results had also placed it first statewide, amid efforts emphasizing evidence-based reading instruction and school-level improvement.
Monroe City Council scheduled a special public meeting after discussing recurring concerns in the Miller Street and Meadow Street area at its August 11 regular meeting. The area includes the Community Shelter of Union County, and residents and businesses raised concerns about conduct and repeat calls for service in the surrounding public spaces. City officials said they were considering immediate environmental measures as well as longer-term housing and service responses.
North Carolina health officials said a measles patient who lives in another state traveled through the Asheville area while infectious. The alert concerns possible exposures at specific locations in Hendersonville and Asheville, not a newly reported North Carolina case; the state said no measles cases had been reported in North Carolina since February 2026.
The Carolina Panthers added veteran inside linebacker Bobby Okereke on a one-year deal after the preseason, following his three seasons with the New York Giants and four with the Indianapolis Colts. The signing replaced an unsettled competition for the linebacker spot beside Devin Lloyd. Okereke has started 95 of 110 career NFL games and has recorded at least 132 tackles in four of his past five seasons.
