The Salvation Army of Louisville operates services for people experiencing homelessness at 911 S. Brook St., including a daytime shelter program. WLKY reports that the organization will permanently close that day shelter on Nov. 2 after reviewing funding, staffing, volunteer capacity and usage. The organization says it will continue other assistance, including emergency shelter, meals, food boxes, financial aid as funding allows, case management and disaster services.
The Kentucky Department of Education released 2025-26 assessment and accountability results on Oct. 15, covering statewide testing and school-performance indicators. Statewide reading proficiency rose across elementary, middle and high school levels, while math proficiency was flat in elementary grades and fell slightly in middle and high school; Jefferson County Public Schools showed similarly modest reading gains but remained below state averages.
Stooges Bar & Grill at 7123 Grade Lane in Louisville has been closed since UPS Flight 2976 crashed shortly after takeoff from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport on Nov. 4, 2025. The restaurant building was narrowly missed and everyone inside evacuated safely, but the surrounding crash response, road closure, cleanup concerns and loss of employees prevented a reopening. In an Oct. 15 Facebook announcement reported by The Courier Journal, the business said it would close permanently after 44 years.
Kentucky’s 2026 U.S. Senate election will determine who succeeds retiring Sen. Mitch McConnell, whose term ends in January 2027. Republican Rep. Andy Barr and Democratic nominee Charles Booker presented contrasting explanations and remedies for household cost pressures in a WLKY candidate report. Old Forester, a Louisville-based bourbon brand owned by Brown-Forman, introduced the Tribute Series as a new annual ultra-premium release. Its inaugural 2026 bottling is a 12-year-old bourbon bottled at 115 proof and packaged in a collectible decanter drawing on the brand’s mid-century holiday decanters. The release uses a batch of the brand’s highest age-stated stock rather than a single barrel or single lot.
Donovan Mitchell is a former University of Louisville basketball standout and current Cleveland Cavaliers guard. He made a ceremonial appearance before Game 3 of the 2026 American League Championship Series in Cleveland, where the Guardians faced the Tampa Bay Rays. The Guardians won the game 3-2 to take a 2-1 series lead.
Former Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin is involved in a Jefferson Family Court dispute over support for his adopted son, Jonah Bevin. The case has included litigation over Bevin’s financial disclosures, a contempt finding and arrest warrant later stayed and ordered recalled by the Kentucky Court of Appeals, and a July evidentiary hearing at which Bevin did not appear. On Oct. 16, WLKY posted that a judge was seeking more evidence in the child-support case, but the persisted social post provides no further details or underlying court record.
