A Manatee County Mosquito Control District helicopter crashed in Myakka City, Florida, late Thursday after striking a private radio tower. The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office said a second helicopter was flying nearby but landed safely and was not involved in the collision. The FAA was responding as local fire and sheriff’s personnel investigated the fatal crash.
A contractor installing tubing for electrical wiring struck a 24-inch sewer pipe near 26th Street West and 60th Avenue West in Bradenton, according to Manatee County officials as reported by the Bradenton Herald. The resulting sewer overflow was initially estimated at more than 300,000 gallons, and county crews were repairing the pipe and cleaning up the spill. Florida requires wastewater spills exceeding 1,000 gallons, or those that may threaten public health or the environment, to be reported to the State Watch Office.
A 2003 Honda CR-V crashed into Tattle Tales Learning Center at 1211 N. Pine Hills Road in the Pine Hills area of Orange County on the afternoon of October 15. Florida Highway Patrol said the 79-year-old driver left the southbound roadway for an undetermined reason, crossed the median and northbound lanes, and struck the daycare. Three children and two adults were hospitalized; local outlets reported all five were in good condition later that day, while the cause remains under investigation.
Tampa has already committed $80 million toward public infrastructure serving a proposed new Tampa Bay Rays ballpark at Hillsborough College’s Dale Mabry campus. On Oct. 15, City Council approved a procedural step to seek court validation for borrowing up to that amount, preserving the option to issue bonds later rather than authorizing an immediate bond sale. The proposed stadium is projected to open for the 2029 season, with the Rays responsible for half of its reported $2.36 billion cost and cost overruns.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier opened a civil investigation into Discord in March 2026 and subpoenaed records concerning the platform’s child-safety practices. On October 15, Florida filed a civil complaint in the 20th Judicial Circuit Court in Glades County, alleging Discord’s safety representations, age-verification practices, and handling of children’s data violated state law. Discord disputes the lawsuit’s characterization of its platform and says it has invested in user safety.
Florida’s 2026 general election is scheduled for November 3, with the statewide mandatory early-voting period running October 24–31; county supervisors may add optional early-voting days. Sarasota and Manatee counties are exercising that option, opening in-person early voting on October 19. Sarasota locations will operate through November 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Manatee locations will operate on the same dates from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Hillsborough Transportation Planning Organization voted to update its transportation improvement plan to enable an electric-commercial-truck charging project near Interstate 4. The project is planned for a new truck-parking facility at County Line Road and is funded by a $24.7 million federal grant. Officials describe the corridor as an important freight connection between Port Tampa and destinations across Florida and beyond.
