Voters in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties are being asked on November 3, 2026, to renew existing one-mill local property-tax levies for public-school operations. The levies have been approved on four-year cycles and support teacher compensation, school safety, mental-health services and other district programs. School leaders are campaigning for renewal while warning that a separate statewide property-tax measure could confuse voters.

It needs approval from 60% of voters, making topline majority support insufficient for passage. Recent polling has produced sharply divergent results, while supporters frame it as homeowner affordability relief and opponents warn of pressure on local-government revenues and services.

SeaWorld Orlando temporarily closed its Mako roller coaster after a fatal fall from the Goliath coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia prompted investigations and precautionary ride shutdowns. Mako and the Georgia Goliath were manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard, and both use similar restraint systems; however, authorities had not determined the cause of the fatal fall. Florida’s largest theme parks conduct their own ride inspections rather than being subject to the state inspection regime that applies to smaller venues.
The Florida Panthers hosted the Vancouver Canucks at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise on Oct. 15, 2026, during the club’s Vamos Gatos Night. Florida erased a 2-0 third-period deficit as Brady Tkachuk scored all three Panthers goals, including the overtime winner. The result was Tkachuk’s second consecutive hat trick and lifted the Panthers to 4-2-2.
Two women, suing anonymously as Jane Doe 1 and Jane Doe 2, filed a federal civil lawsuit alleging that former Florida U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz and others participated in a scheme to obtain commercial sex through payments, travel, lodging and drugs. The complaint concerns alleged conduct from 2017 through early 2019; its allegations have not been adjudicated. Gaetz has denied wrongdoing, saying much of the alleged conduct is false. The suit follows a December 2024 House Ethics Committee report that found substantial evidence of separate misconduct allegations involving Gaetz, which he also denied.
