A fatal collision and a subsequent crash involving a Tesla occurred on eastbound Interstate 80 near Air Base Parkway in Fairfield, Solano County. CHP officers had closed lanes and deployed flares, cones and emergency lights while responding to the first crash when the Tesla struck a patrol vehicle. The Tesla driver reportedly said he was asleep and using driver-assistance technology, but investigators had not confirmed whether Tesla Full Self-Driving was active.

The U.S. Department of Justice filed suit against California, Secretary of State Shirley Weber and Los Angeles County Registrar Dean Logan over a federal list of more than 20,000 people it says are likely noncitizens registered to vote. The government seeks to prevent tabulation of mail ballots from people on that list unless their citizenship is verified, while California officials say the underlying data and methodology have not been substantiated. California automatically mails ballots to registered voters, and voting for the Nov. 3 federal election was already underway when the suit was filed.
