What San Jose is talking about
The Bay Area’s earthquake risk is concentrated along several active fault systems, including the Hayward–Rodgers Creek and San Andreas faults. Updated calculations reported Sept. 3 put the chance of at least a magnitude 6.7 earthquake in the region during the next 30 years at 74%, compared with 72% in the prior 2014 estimate. The revision is a probability estimate over a 30-year period, not a prediction that an earthquake is imminent or knowable at a particular time.
Uber Technologies announced a companywide restructuring that will reduce its workforce by about 10% while simplifying reporting structures and consolidating some teams. The San Francisco-based ride-hailing and delivery company says it will reinvest savings in growth, innovation, drivers, couriers, merchants and its autonomous-vehicle ambitions.
Uber said it plans to invest more than $10 billion in autonomous-vehicle partnerships and related initiatives in the coming years, as it competes with robotaxi companies including Waymo and Tesla. The investment plan was reported alongside a restructuring that will eliminate about 3,300 jobs, or 10% of Uber’s global workforce, and consolidate parts of its operations.
Regional Medical Center is the main emergency facility serving East San José and, under prior HCA Healthcare ownership, lost trauma, comprehensive stroke and certain cardiac services in 2024. Santa Clara County reached an agreement to acquire the hospital in January 2025 and has since pursued restoration and expansion of services. The latest emergency-department project addresses rising demand but local reports differ slightly on the resulting bed total.
The Timber Fire has been active near Big Sur since August 8, while the Plaskett Fire began August 26 in southern Monterey County. Fire operations and evacuation needs led to recurring Highway 1 restrictions, affecting access to the Big Sur community and through travel on the Central Coast. As of September 3, the highway remained closed across a long Monterey County segment because of wildfire activity, although a northern portion was expected to reopen that morning.
St. Helena residents have continued reporting discolored, foul-smelling tap water despite utility-rate increases and city maintenance work. A Napa County Civil Grand Jury report released in June criticized deferred maintenance and estimated that systemwide improvements could require $55 million to $60 million. The city attributes discoloration during higher-flow periods to naturally occurring mineral sediment disturbed in aging water mains and says it is generally not a public-health concern.
