Barnes Tennis Center is a city-owned tennis and pickleball facility in Point Loma operated by the nonprofit Youth Tennis San Diego under a lease signed in 1994. The City Auditor’s hotline investigation examined allegations concerning the lease and an overflow parking area. The audit found violations of lease terms, permitting requirements, and environmental regulations, while also identifying a gap in City enforcement of code violations on City-owned property.
California lawmakers have sent two measures addressing child safety and AI companion technology to Gov. Gavin Newsom. SB 1119, described as Adam’s Law, would expand safeguards for minors using companion chatbots; a separate Padilla bill, SB 867, would temporarily restrict the manufacture and sale of AI-chatbot-powered toys for children under 16. Newsom has until September 30, 2026, to sign or veto measures passed in the session.
Chula Vista Police Department has operated a drone program since 2018, when it became the first U.S. city authorized to fly drones beyond visual line of sight in response to 911 calls. Its current drones are piloted by sworn officers, and the department says the program has responded to more than 22,000 service calls. Separately, the city has an existing Flock Safety automated license-plate-reader program, with 150 stationary cameras approved in October 2023.
USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), homeported in San Diego, began its deployment in November 2025 and conducted nearly seven months of operations in the U.S. Central Command area. The carrier strike group arrived in Thailand for scheduled port visits on Sept. 2, 2026, with Lincoln docking at Laem Chabang. The stop was Lincoln’s first full port stop of the deployment and gave its sailors and Marines an opportunity for rest and recreation before the group continues routine operations in the U.S. 7th Fleet area.
San Diego FC made several roster transactions around Major League Soccer’s Sept. 2, 2026 transfer deadline. The club added defender Sam Vines on loan from Houston and midfielder David Mimbang on loan from sister club FC Nordsjælland, while moving forward Lewis Morgan to Toronto FC and transferring defender Luca Bombino to Stoke City.
