PG&E began a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) on the evening of Oct. 14 as dry vegetation, low humidity and strong winds created critical wildfire conditions across parts of Northern and Central California. The utility had warned that the event could affect roughly 70,000 customers in 29 counties, while subsequent reporting found nearly 76,000 customers without power across 26 counties by Oct. 15 afternoon. Shutoffs are intended to reduce the chance that energized power lines ignite fires, but can continue until weather improves and crews inspect lines.

California’s SB 805, known as the No Vigilantes Act, sought to require federal officers working publicly in the state to display a name or badge number, with misdemeanor consequences for noncompliance. The measure was part of California’s response to concerns over unidentified federal immigration agents and people impersonating immigration officers. The Ninth Circuit had already prevented enforcement while the federal government’s challenge was on appeal; its October ruling directed entry of a preliminary injunction against the federal-officer provision.

H Mart announced in 2023 that it would open a store in south Sacramento, but construction issues delayed the project. The planned store is at 6366 Mack Road and will include grocery, meat and seafood departments plus a six-stall food court. As of October 15, 2026, H Mart had not set an opening date.

IRONMAN California is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026, in the Sacramento region. The triathlon will bring race-day closures and ramp restrictions in downtown Sacramento, West Sacramento and Yolo County, while setup and teardown closures in the downtown area began Oct. 13 and extend through Oct. 20. Sacramento Regional Transit also expects light-rail service changes and bus bridges during the race.

Heritage Oaks Park is a 9-acre park at 1300 Lake Washington Boulevard in West Sacramento’s Southport community. The city’s renovation was funded through park impact fees and a $3 million California Department of Parks and Recreation Land and Water Conservation Fund grant. The redesign was developed with input from Wilton Rancheria, Yoche Dehe Wintun Nation and Shingle Springs Rancheria.

UC Davis’s School of Education will replace its existing six-quarter M.A. in Education pathway with a four-quarter Master of Education program that combines a teaching credential and master’s degree. The university says the shorter program is intended to reduce time and financial barriers to teacher preparation amid California’s long-running educator shortage. The first cohort is scheduled to begin in July 2027, aligned with K–12 student-teaching placements.
