California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Thursday, November 5, 2026, that he will commute all 548 death sentences in the state to life without parole. He placed a moratorium on executions in 2019, and California has not executed anyone since 2006. The state constitution requires California Supreme Court approval for clemency for anyone convicted of more than one felony, which covers 382 of the cases. Governor-elect Xavier Becerra takes office in January and has said he will extend the moratorium.
