The Bryson Fire began near Encinal Canyon Road and Mulholland Highway north of Malibu on October 15 amid a Red Flag Warning and strong Santa Ana winds. It expanded rapidly from an initially reported two acres to about 200 acres by Thursday night, prompting evacuation orders and warnings in western Malibu and nearby Santa Monica Mountains communities. The fire also prompted the evacuation of Camp Kilpatrick, a Los Angeles County juvenile detention facility.
High winds, low humidity and dry conditions prompted utilities in California to use Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) to reduce the chance that electrical equipment could ignite wildfires. Kern County was among the affected areas, with a Red Flag Warning in effect for its mountains through Friday and potentially hazardous wind conditions expected to continue into Saturday. Southern California Edison and PG&E both reported Kern County customers were either without power or could be affected.
Riverside County sheriff’s deputies began investigating after an elderly person was assaulted in Moreno Valley on December 8, 2024, and reported that someone had tried to kill them. Detectives say the investigation developed evidence of a suspected real-estate fraud operation affecting at least four additional people, including elderly and deceased individuals. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office Real Estate Fraud Unit joined the investigation, which remains ongoing.
Marco Giovanni Santarelli founded and led Norada Capital Management, a Laguna Niguel-based private-equity fund. Federal prosecutors said he solicited investors nationwide between June 2020 and June 2024 through unsecured promissory notes that promised high monthly returns. Santarelli pleaded guilty to wire fraud in October 2025 and was sentenced in federal court on October 15, 2026.
A Santa Ana wind event brought red-flag conditions to parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties beginning October 15, combining strong winds, low humidity and unusually warm temperatures.
