James Casady Cangro, 46, was housed at the minimum-security satellite camp adjacent to the Federal Correctional Complex in Tucson. Prison staff spotted him near the visitor parking lot at about 8:10 a.m. on September 2; he ran toward Wilmot Road and was later apprehended by deputy U.S. marshals near the facility. He remains in federal custody and is expected to face additional proceedings related to the escape.
Bisbee High School in Bisbee, Arizona, received a law-enforcement response on September 2 after staff found a suspicious bathroom message suggesting an event might occur that day. Bisbee police, Cochise County sheriff’s deputies and federal partners increased security while investigating. A separate report to the U.S. Border Patrol’s Brian A. Terry Station raised concern about a possible active shooter, but responding agencies found no active shooter or credible active threat. A destructive flash flood struck Bright Angel Canyon in Grand Canyon National Park on Aug. 29, 2026. The flooding killed two members of a three-person hiking group from Granbury, Texas, and caused extensive damage in the inner canyon, including to trails, footbridges and the Transcanyon Waterline. Search operations remained underway for the group’s third member as of Sept. 2.
Nikola Bria Lukow is an eighth-grade student at BASIS Tucson North in Tucson, Arizona. Lukow was named a Top 300 Innovator in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge, a national middle-school STEM competition administered by Society for Science.
Desert View High School in Tucson runs precision manufacturing and drafting programs in which students design and produce components for prosthetic legs. The work combines computer-aided design, machining and 3D printing with humanitarian trips where students help fit recipients. Earlier reporting described the school as producing the knee-and-ankle portion of a larger prosthetic-leg system alongside other participating schools.
The Southern Arizona Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery is a state-operated veterans cemetery in Sierra Vista, Arizona, established on roughly 145 acres formerly within the Fort Huachuca Military Reservation. It has provided interments since December 2001 and serves veterans and eligible family members in southern Arizona.
Douglas and Bisbee high schools were preparing for a football rivalry game when vandalism was discovered at the Douglas High School football stadium on Sept. 2. Douglas police were investigating the damage, including whether people associated with Bisbee High School were involved. Bisbee canceled its own scheduled bonfire and said other pregame activities, potentially including the game, could be affected.
